A Non-standard Genetic Algorithm Approach to Solve Constrained School Timetabling Problems

چکیده
In this paper a non-standard constructive approach is described to solve problems of timetabling, so necessary in every school and university. Genetic Algorithms have been used, but adapting them to the characteristics of the problem under consideration. Hard constrains, feasible timetables, have been considered in the problem formulation, forcing us to define a particular population generation and a new guided mutation operator. It has been proved that modified genetic algorithms can be very useful in this kind of problems for the easiness of including constrains and the effectiveness of its resolution, reaching optimum values in few iterations.

A Study of Genetic Algorithms to Solve the School Timetabling Problem
This paper examines the use of genetic algorithms (GAs) to solve the school timetabling problem. The school timetabling problem falls into the category of NP-hard problems. Instances of this problem vary drastically from school to school and country to country. Previous work in this area has used genetic algorithms to solve a particular school timetabling problem and has not evaluated the perfo...
متن کاملAn Optimization via Simulation approach for the preemptive and non-preemptive multi-mode resource-constrained project scheduling problems
In this paper a novel modelling and solving method has been developed to address the so-called resource constrained project scheduling problem (RCPSP) where project tasks have multiple modes and also the preemption of activities are allowed. To solve this NP-hard problem, a new general optimization via simulation (OvS) approach has been developed which is the main contribution of the current re...
متن کاملRetracted: Using genetic algorithm approach to solve a multi-product EPQ model with defective items, rework, and constrained space
The Economic Production Quantity (EPQ) model is often used in the manufacturing sector to assist firms in determining the optimal production lot size that minimizes overall production-inventory costs. There are some assumptions in the EPQ model that restrict this model for real-world applications. Some of these assumptions are (1) infinite space of warehouse, (2) all of the pr...
متن کاملCONSTRAINED BIG BANG-BIG CRUNCH ALGORITHM FOR OPTIMAL SOLUTION OF LARGE SCALE RESERVOIR OPERATION PROBLEM
A constrained version of the Big Bang-Big Crunch algorithm for the efficient solution of the optimal reservoir operation problems is proposed in this paper. Big Bang-Big Crunch (BB-BC) algorithm is a new meta-heuristic population-based algorithm that relies on one of the theories of the evolution of universe namely, the Big Bang and Big Crunch theory. An improved formulation of the algorithm na...
متن کاملGenetic Algorithm-Based Optimization Approach for an Uncapacitated Single Allocation P-hub Center Problem with more realistic cost structure
A p-hub center network design problem is definition of some nodes as hubs and allocation of non-hub nodes to them wherein the maximum travel times between any pair of nodes is minimized. The distinctive feature of this study is proposing a new mathematical formulation for modeling costs in a p-hub center problem. Here, instead of considering costs as a linear function of distance, for the first...
